PAO Underscores Global Competitiveness of Local Eye Care Experts Organizes 2 Significant Events in Ophthalmology

27 November 2012; Manila, Philippines: The Philippine Academy of Ophthalmology has announced that the country has recently won the bid to hold the 3rd Biennial Scientific Meeting, one of the most prestigious medical events in Asia. Slated on November 27 to 29, 2012 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel Manila, the country is expected to welcome over 400 key delegates from the United States, Germany, Italy, Australia, Taiwan, Japan, China, Singapore, India and Thailand. Among the topics to be discussed are the globalization of eye banking, eye infection and the use of contact lenses, LASIK for vision correction, new treatment for dry eye disease and stem cell therapy for ocular surface reconstruction.
“This is an accomplishment for the Philippines as we make significant strides in the field of ophthalmology. This is an opportunity to showcase that the country is ready, especially in terms of technology, innovations and the availability of adept Filipino doctors to address the various eye care needs of the global community,” said Dr. Johann Michael Reyes, PAO Committee Chair for Public Relations.
Reinforcing its commitment to continuously train and educate local doctors to further competency in the field of ophthalmology, the PAO is also holding its Annual Meeting on November 29 to December 2, 2012 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Entitled, "Translational Ophthalmology: from Basics to Clinics," the PAO seeks to present new developments in eye health care to benefit Filipino patients. Over 1,400 participants from all over the Philippines and surrounding countries are expected to grace this event.
At present, there are still over half a million Filipinos who are afflicted with blindness because of preventable causes. “Collectively, we believe that Filipino doctors, in cooperation with the PAO, the government and the health industry can work hand-in-hand in curbing the prevalence of preventable causes of blindness in the Philippines,” explained Dr. Reyes.
Among the invited speakers to the PAO Annual Meeting are Dr. Bhupendra Patel of the University of Utah, USA, Dr. Eric Donnenfeld of the Ophthalmic Consultants of Long Island, USA, and Dr. Karl Golnik of the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Eye Institute, USA, Dr. Evelyn Paysse of Texas Children's Hospital USA, Dr.Jennifer Sun of Joslin Diabetes Center USA and Dr. Zuraidah Mustari from Hospital Nor Zahirah, Malaysia.
