Run for the Pasig River All Set on October 6 for the Benefit of 16 Esteros in Manila & Quezon City

Monday, September 23, 2013

A total of 16 esteros in Manila and Quezon City are being rehabilitated by ABS-CBN Foundation's Kapit Bisig Para sa Ilog Pasig (KBPIP) and Pasig River Rehabilitation Commission (PRRC) this year through the help of the supporters of the annual "Run for the Pasig River," private donors and government agencies.

"We started in Estero de Paco, and now we're currently cleaning 16 esteros," ABS-CBN Foundation managing director and PRRC chairperson Gina Lopez announced in the press conference held at Torre Venezia Suites, the official hotel partner of the event.

Following the notable transformation of the Estero de Paco in Manila that started in 2009, KBPIP and PRRC continues its goal to bring back the glory of the Pasig River beginning on its tributaries.

Just this year, PRRC launched the rehabilitated Estero de Aviles and Estero de Santibanez in Manila. From community preparations, clean-ups and information, education and communication campaigns to actual development, drastic changes can be seen in the esteros now.

From trash-choked creeks occupied by informal settlers, the esteros have turned into parks filled with plants, flowers and trees.

The rehabilitation process began by relocating thousands of families living along the waterways, building linear parks, training of River Warriors or community volunteers who clean and guard the esteros against polluters, and installing active island reactors to bring life back into the estero waters.

KBPIP and PRRC target to complete the clean-up in San Francisco, Culiat and Pasong Tamo Creeks in Quezon City by next year. Lopez wants the Quezon City creeks to be improved as she sees them as viable tourist spots and commercial hubs where residents can earn a living and improve their lives.

A long-term and more aggressive campaign for cleaner waterways in Metro Manila is set in the upcoming "10.06.2013 Run for the Pasig River" to be held at the Quezon Memorial Circle on October 6.

"This is your country, this is your city. We can only have the country and the city that we dream and hope for, if we actively aspire for it. And we manifest that aspiration in actual action. So if you want a country which is clean and beautiful, communities in love, peace and harmony, and our rivers that are clean and not smelly, come and run on that day. Make a statement, wake up early and run with the rest of us and say we want the Pasig River clean. And if you do this, we will clean that river," said Lopez.

This year's "Run for the Pasig River" is the Quezon City leg of "One Run, One Philippines," the ABS-CBN's simultaneous advocacy run across five cities in celebration of its 60th anniversary. Other legs will be held in Cebu, Davao, Bacolod and Los Angeles (USA).

KBPIP has a track record of organizing four successful runs, namely the 2009 Philippine International Marathon: A Run for the Pasig River with an estimated 23,000 participants, the historic 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River that broke the Guinness World Record for the "most participants in a racing event" with 116,087 runners, 11.20.2011 Run for the Pasig River was the largest foot race joined by 86,547 runners, and last year's 09.30.2012 Run, Ride & Roll for the Pasig River saw an estimated 70,000 participants bike, skate, and run for the advocacy run.

The 10.10.10 Run for the Pasig River won a Bronze Anvil and an Award of Excellence at the 45th Anvil Awards given by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines, while the Estero de Paco clean-up earned an Award of Merit from the 2010 Philippine Quill Awards given by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Philippines.
